Dreamachine: Origins
The Dreamachine is a stroboscopic flicker device that induces the brain to produce visual imagery. It was conceived by artist painter and writer Brion Gysin, along with his friend Ian Sommerville.
A Dreamachine “viewed” with the eyes closed creates increasingly bright and complex patterns of color until the “viewer” feels surrounded by a kaleidoscope of light and brilliant visions. The experience opens a new area of Interior Vision of lucid imagination. Many users have referred to it as a drug-free ‘trip’, but with the emphasis on inward travel into the areas of one’s own unconscious. David Bowie and Kurt Cobain have used the Dreamachine for inspiration in the creative process.
The Dreamachine is the subject of the award winning National Film Board of Canada 2008 feature documentary film FLicKeR by Nik Sheehan.
